How to Have the Best Hair of Your Life

Nurture curls in the shower. Your hair type craves moisture the way Kanye craves attention, so use a sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner containing nourishers like shea butter, coconut oil, avocado, or macadamia oil. “And to keep hair soft, try not to shampoo more than three times a week,” says hairstylist Mara Roszak, who coifs Zoe Saldana.

Ditch your hairbrush. Permanently. “Brushing curls or waves sets off a cloud of fuzz,” says hairstylist Bridget Brager, who works with Kate Bosworth. Instead, use a wide-tooth comb to gently untangle wet hair from the ends up. Then, once it’s dry, take the Beatles’ advice and let it be.

Revive limp curls in a snap. When waves or spirals fall flat, grab a curling iron with a barrel that’s a bit wider than your curls—usually ¾ inch for fine curls or 1 ¼ inches for loose waves. “Curl just the top layer of your hair and the pieces around your face, and it’ll make your entire style look fresh again,” Brager says.

Select the right styler. “Texturizers, salt sprays, and products with silicone can be drying,” says Roszak. Instead, mist a leave-in conditioning spray (try the Ouidad below) on fine curls; use a light-hold cream likeLiving Proof Curl Defining Cream, $28, on thick hair.

Do a weekly hair mask. The dose of hydration is your insurance policy against frizz. Pick one made for curls that has the same ingredients we advised for shampoo and conditioner. “Apply the mask everywhere but your roots, cover hair with a shower cap, and wait at least 10 minutes before rinsing,” says Roszak.
